
Getting the Heat Right: A Better Way to Handle PET Preforms
If you’ve spent any time with high-speed blowing, you know the struggle. You’re trying to get the center of that PET preform hot enough to blow, but you’re terrified of scorching the outer wall. It’s a constant balancing act. For those of you running SMI SR 8 blowers or Husky HyPET systems, we’ve taken a different approach with our replacement lamps. Instead of just throwing more heat at the problem, we’ve shifted the infrared spectrum. We’re targeting the exact wavelengths that the PET polymer actually likes to absorb. Let’s talk power. We build these lamps for high-wattage output because we know you can’t afford to slow down your cycle speeds. By using high-voltage configurations, you get a much tighter heat density per millimeter. This means the lamp hits its operating temperature faster during ramp-up. But here is the catch: your power supplies have to match the lamp’s wattage. If you try to “cheat” the system by over-volting the tube to get a bit more speed, you’re just going to burn them out faster. It’s a trade-off that usually isn’t worth the headache. The secret is in the glass. We use high-purity quartz because it can take the thermal shock of rapid cycling without cracking. But the real magic is the internal coating. We added a specific refractive layer that basically pushes the IR energy deeper into the preform wall. This kills that annoying “cold core” effect. You know the one—where you end up with uneven wall thickness or those pearlescent defects that make a bottle look cheap. Plus, we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. You can just pop them in. No rewiring, no fuss. A few things to keep in mind. More penetration power means more intense radiant heat. It’s great for thicker preforms, but it does put a bit more pressure on your cooling fans. If your airflow isn’t dialed in, the lamp housing can get way too hot. And please, do your team a favor: check the reflectors every shift. A dirty reflector ruins the efficiency of the coating. When that happens, the lamp has to run hotter just to hit the same temperature, and that’s how you shorten the life of your gear. Keep them clean, and they’ll take care of you.
