
Getting the Heat Right: A Better Way to Warm Your PET Preforms
If you’ve spent any time with a SIG Blomax (4, 6, or 8) or a Husky HyPET, you know the struggle. You’re trying to get the center of that PET preform hot enough to blow, but by the time the core is ready, the surface is already scorching. That’s where you get those annoying pearlescent streaks or walls that are thick in one spot and paper-thin in another. It’s frustrating. You don’t just need “more heat”—you need the heat to actually get inside the plastic.
The trick to deep heating
Here is the thing: standard halogen tubes mostly just blast the surface. We do things differently. We tweaked the quartz composition in our lamps to shift the light toward the longer-wave infrared spectrum. In plain English? The heat soaks in deeper. Instead of searing the outside, it warms the preform from the inside out. Plus, we built these for high-wattage density. When you crank them up to peak voltage, the heat flux is intense. You’ll notice the preforms hit their blowing temperature faster, which means you can finally push your cycle times without worrying about quality drops.
No headaches during install
Nobody wants to spend their weekend modifying lamp holders. These are simple drop-in replacements. We use the standard R7s or SK15 connectors, so you just plug them in and go. We also used heavy-duty quartz glass because we know these machines cycle fast, and the thermal shock can be brutal on cheaper bulbs. We’re also obsessive about the size. If a lamp is off by even two or three millimeters, it won’t sit right in the oven rack. That leads to “cold spots” and uneven heating. We keep the tolerances tight so they fit perfectly every time.
A few things to keep in mind
More penetration power is great, but it does mean your oven cavity is going to get hotter. If your cooling blowers are clogged or just aren’t cutting it, your ambient temp will climb. Keep an eye on that airflow, or you’ll burn out the ends of your lamps way too soon. And a pro tip:**keep the quartz clean.**A single fingerprint or a smudge of oil creates a hot spot. That’s how tubes crack. Give them a clean wipe, and they’ll last much longer.
