
How to Actually Size Your Bathroom Infrared Heater
When you’re picking out an IPX4 splash-proof heater, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more isn’t always better. If you go too big, you’re basically paying to bake your bathroom, wasting electricity, and potentially stressing out the heater’s casing. Go too small? You’ll be shivering in your towel while the heater struggles to keep up. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between the size of your room and how much heat it actually loses.
Picking the Right Wattage
I usually break this down into three simple categories based on the floor space. For those tiny powder rooms—you know, the ones under 4m²—you don’t need a powerhouse. A 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It keeps things cozy without making your electric bill jump. If you’re dealing with a medium-sized bathroom (somewhere between 4m² and 8m²), you’ll want to step it up to 800W or 1200W. This gets the room warm a lot faster. Then you have the big master baths or wet rooms over 10m². In these spaces, one giant heater usually isn’t the answer. I’d suggest using a few 1500W+ units spread out. It stops those annoying “cold spots” and keeps any single lamp from burning out because it’s working overtime.
The Deal with IPX4 and Heat
The “IPX4” label just means the unit can handle water splashes from any angle. To make that happen, we use sealed gaskets and recessed housings. But there’s a trade-off. Those seals keep water out, but they also trap heat inside the unit. Unlike an industrial heater that’s wide open to the air, these get hot on the inside pretty quickly. If you try to cram 2000W into a tiny IPX4 frame, you’re asking for trouble. The internal parts just take a beating. Also, do yourself a favor and check your circuit breaker before you start wiring up a bunch of high-wattage heaters. You don’t want to trip the power the second you turn the heat on.
Saving a Bit of Cash
Since shortwave infrared heats you and the walls rather than the air, you can be pretty smart about how you use it. Try adding a timer or a humidity sensor. When you size the wattage exactly to your room, the heater doesn’t have to run constantly. It’s better for the lamp’s lifespan, and it keeps your power draw lean. Simple.
