
Making Outdoor Infrared Heaters Actually “Smart”
When people talk about smart home heaters, they usually focus on the app. But if you’re putting these outdoors, the app is the easy part. The real challenge is the hardware. Think about it. When you hit a button on your phone to warm up the patio, you’re asking for a massive, instant surge of electricity to hit those infrared elements. That’s a lot of power moving very quickly.
Dealing with the Elements
We build these things to IP65 standards because, frankly, gardens are brutal. Rain, wind, and dust don’t play nice with electronics. Without those tight seals, moisture creeps into the terminals, and the moment you flip the switch, you’ve got a short circuit. Not a great way to start a party. Then there’s the heat itself. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you, which is a losing battle outdoors. These use infrared radiation. It travels in a straight line and hits you instantly. We use quartz or halogen tubes so you aren’t standing there shivering for ten minutes waiting for the unit to “warm up.” It’s on. Fast.
The Wiring Secret
You can’t just plug a 2000W heater into a standard smart light switch and hope for the best. You’ll weld the contacts shut almost immediately. To make this work, we use heavy-duty smart relays or Zigbee/Matter controllers. It’s a simple setup: a low-voltage signal tells the relay to close, which then lets the high-voltage power flow to the heater. No manual dials, no walking across the deck in your pajamas—just a click on your phone and the heat kicks in.
A Word of Warning
There is a catch, though. Rapid heat requires a ton of current. If you try to wire five of these units into one single circuit, you’re going to trip your breaker. It’s that simple. To avoid voltage drops (which make your heaters feel weak and inefficient), we always suggest running dedicated lines for larger installations. It’s a bit more work upfront, but it’s the only way to make sure your patio actually stays warm.
