
Getting the Heat Right in Husky HyPET Systems
If you’ve ever worked with high-speed PET blowing, you know the struggle. You’re trying to get the center of a thick-walled preform hot enough to blow, but you’re terrified of scorching the outside. It’s a delicate balance. For those of us running Husky HyPET systems, the secret is all in the infrared lamps. When your line is moving fast, you don’t have time to wait for heat to slowly soak in. You need it to happen now. The Power Game Here’s the thing about power density. We use high-wattage lamps with very specific voltage profiles because we need that heat flux to be aggressive. Think of it like this: more power means a denser concentration of photons. That’s what actually pushes the heat deep into the PET. But you have to be careful. Your power supplies need to match these specs perfectly. If the voltage is off, you’re looking at two bad options: either your lamps burn out way too early, or you don’t get enough heat, leaving you with bottles that have uneven walls. Nobody wants that. Why the Coating Matters Most people start with standard clear quartz lamps, but there’s a problem—they reflect too much energy right off the surface. It’s a waste. We use specialized coatings to shift the emission spectrum. Basically, we tune the lamp to a wavelength that the PET polymer actually “likes” to absorb. It’s a much more efficient way to hit that blowing temperature quickly. And a quick tip on the hardware: we use R7s or Sk15 connectors depending on your oven. Make sure they’re tight. A loose connection is a recipe for a hot spot, and that’s how you end up melting your socket. The Trade-off The good news is these lamps are drop-in replacements. You can swap them into your Husky system and immediately push your machine speed without worrying about the heat becoming inconsistent. But there is a catch. When you crank up the heat density, your oven’s cooling blowers have to work a lot harder. If your blowers are clogged or just too small for the job, the ambient temperature inside the oven will start to climb. Before you know it, your preforms are starting to deform. If you’re upgrading to these higher-penetration tubes, do yourself a favor and double-check your airflow. It’ll save you a massive headache later.
