
Why you should ditch those old bathroom heat lamps for IR heaters
Ever notice how those old-school bathroom heat lamps just… don’t really work? You turn them on, wait forever, and you’re still shivering while the room just feels vaguely humid. That’s because they’re trying to heat the air, and in a steamy bathroom, that air just vanishes. Lately, we’ve been moving toward high-waterproof infrared (IR) heaters built right into the mirrors. It’s a totally different experience. Instead of fighting the steam, these things beam heat directly onto you. It’s almost instant. Since we use quartz glass tubes and halogen gas, you don’t have to stand there waiting. You flip the switch, the mirror clears up, and you actually feel the warmth on your skin within seconds. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into a beam of sunlight. But here’s the thing: bathrooms are brutal on electronics. If you’re looking at these, the only number that actually matters is the IP rating. Most cheap heaters die because moisture sneaks into the wiring and fries everything. The high-end IR units fix this with sealed gaskets and coatings that stop corrosion in its tracks. If the wiring isn’t built for a high-moisture zone, it’s just a ticking time bomb for a burnout. Now, there is a catch. IR heat is very directional. It’s intense. If your mirror is too close to where you stand, you might end up with “hot spots” where it feels a bit too toasted. You have to get the wattage right for your specific room size and where the shower is. If you put a monster heater in a tiny powder room, it’s going to feel like a sauna—and not in a good way. One last tip for the install: put these on their own dedicated circuit with a GFCI breaker. These units pull a lot of power the moment they kick on. If your electrical panel is old or overloaded, you’re probably going to trip a breaker. Better to do it right the first time.
