
Why Your Infrared Heater Actually Dies (And How to Stop It)
Here is a little secret about infrared heaters: the heating element itself is rarely what gives out. Most of the time, the failure happens right at the junction where the lead wire meets the quartz tube. If you’re using IP44 waterproof heating tables, you’re dealing with a tricky balance. You’ve got a zone that gets incredibly hot sitting right next to an environment where moisture loves to hang out. If that seal isn’t perfect, moisture sneaks in. Then comes the oxidation. Then comes the short circuit. It’s a headache you really don’t need. The battle against heat and air Most standard potting compounds just can’t handle the stress. They shrink. They crack. They give up. Once that seal breaks, oxygen and humidity rush in to meet the wires. This is where “carbonization” kicks in. Basically, your insulation becomes brittle and starts conducting electricity. When that happens, you get an arc. And just like that, your heater is toast. Good sealing vs. “just okay” sealing A lot of shops try to get by with basic silicone or some heat-shrink tubing. It looks fine for a week, but it doesn’t hold up under a real heat load. We do things a bit differently. We use industrial-grade, high-temp epoxy and compression seals that actually lock the wire in place. Why? Because of the “breathing” effect. Wires expand when they’re hot and shrink when they cool. If the seal isn’t tight, that constant movement slowly pulls the wire away from the tube. Our method stops that from happening. A few things to keep in mind Now, let’s be real about the IP44 rating. It’s great for splashes and keeping out bits of debris, but it’s not a submarine. You can’t dunk it in water. Also, keep an eye on your mounting brackets. Since we use more sealing material to keep the moisture out, that material can sometimes trap heat. Make sure there’s plenty of airflow around the lead-out so your wires don’t cook themselves. And one last tip: if you’re running these on a high-humidity production line, double-check your gaskets. A perfectly sealed lead wire won’t save you if your main junction box is leaking.
