
Can New Infrared Lamps Actually Speed Up Your Old Blowing Machine?
If you’re running a small or mid-sized shop, you probably have a blow molding machine that’s seen better days. It works, but the cycle times are dragging, and you’re left wondering if you can squeeze more bottles per hour out of it without buying a whole new rig. One of the easiest ways to do that is by swapping out your old heating elements for fresh PC preform softening lamps. But does it actually work? Short answer: Yes. But it all comes down to how the heat actually hits the plastic.
The “Secret Sauce” of Preform Softening
Working with PC (Polycarbonate) or PET is a balancing act. If the heat is off, you get uneven walls or crystallization, and suddenly your scrap pile is growing. We design our lamps to blast short-wave infrared radiation. Think of it as a more aggressive, concentrated heat that punches through the preform wall much faster than those tired, degraded tubes you’re likely using now. When you put in a lamp with higher wattage per millimeter, the plastic hits its “glass transition temperature” way quicker. That means less waiting around. Less dwell time. More bottles.
What’s Under the Hood
We stick with quartz glass and halogen gas fills. Why? Because it keeps the filament temperature stable so you aren’t guessing. You’ll probably see R7s or Sk15 connectors on these. They’re the industry standard for a reason—they can handle the tube expanding and contracting as it heats up without the electrical connection cutting out. Now, if you jump to a high-wattage 400V setup, you’re going to feel a massive surge in heat.**But here’s the catch.**These lamps run hot. Really hot. If your cooling fans are choked with dust or just too small for the job, you risk warping the housing or frying your reflectors. Check your fans first.
Making the Switch
The best part is that this isn’t some massive engineering project. You don’t have to tear down your oven. As long as you match the length and voltage of your current setup, it’s a simple swap. Plug them in, wire them up, and you should see the heating time drop almost immediately. That’s when you can finally crank up the machine speed. Just keep a close eye on the plastic for the first few runs. If you push too much heat too fast, you might see bubbles or those annoying “burnt” spots. Dial it in slowly, and you’re good to go.
