
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Let’s be honest: putting electrical heaters in a room full of steam and splashing water is a bit nerve-wracking. If you’re using standard heating elements in a bathroom, you’re basically asking for trouble. To keep things safe, we focus on two things: keeping the water out and making sure the electricity stays where it belongs.
Stopping the Leaks
You can’t just throw some plastic around a wire and call it a day. Damp air finds a way into everything. That’s why we use heavy-duty silicone gaskets and IP-rated seals everywhere a wire enters the unit. The spot where the lamp meets the power lead is usually where things go sideways, so we use sealed connectors that lock moisture out completely. Then there are the quartz glass tubes. We use specialized seals on the end caps to stop water vapor from sneaking into the tungsten filament chamber. If even a tiny bit of moisture hits that hot filament?**Crack.**The tube pops, and your heater is toast.
Dealing with Grounding
Water loves to create its own paths for electricity to travel across a surface. To stop that, we go with a double-insulated design. We put a non-conductive barrier between the live parts and the outer chassis. But we don’t stop there. We also run a dedicated grounding wire straight to the metal frame. Think of it as a safety net. If a seal ever fails and a live wire touches the casing, the breaker trips instantly. It’s much better to have a dead circuit than a live chassis.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the tricky part: the better you seal a unit to keep water out, the harder it is for heat to escape. If you lock everything in a tight, waterproof box, the internal wiring can get dangerously hot. You’ve got to make sure your wire gauge is thick enough to handle that heat without the insulation melting. If you try to push too many watts through a tiny, sealed enclosure, the whole thing will just shut down. And please, for the love of everything, wire it up to a GFCI. It’s the absolute bare minimum for any bathroom install. No exceptions.
