
Keeping Things Warm (and Safe) in the Shower: Why IP55 Quartz Matters
Putting a heater in a bathroom or shower is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing around—basically, a nightmare for electronics. Standard infrared lamps just aren’t built for this. They’ll quit on you. That’s why we stick with IP55 waterproof housings and explosion-proof quartz tubes. It just stops the disasters before they happen. The deal with “explosion-proof” quartz Imagine a quartz tube humming along at 600°C. Now imagine a single, cold drop of water hitting it.
- Crack.* That’s thermal shock. It happens because the glass can’t handle that sudden temperature swing. We use explosion-proof quartz because it’s tough. It takes the hit without shattering. And if the worst possibly happens and the tube does break? The design keeps the glass from spraying shards all over the room. What “IP55” actually means for you You’ll see “IP55” on the spec sheet, but in plain English, it means the unit can handle dust and water jets coming at it from any angle. The real magic is in the seals. We lock down the electrical junctions so steam can’t sneak into the wiring. If you don’t do that, the contacts oxidize, you get some nasty electrical arcing, and then the whole thing burns out. Not a great look. The heat trade-off These lamps put out a ton of shortwave infrared heat. It’s instant. You turn it on, and you feel it immediately. But here’s the catch: that much heat in one spot is intense. If the housing isn’t rated for those temperatures, the heat soak will eventually eat away at those IP55 seals. You have to get the materials right, or the protection doesn’t last. We build these things so you can just wire them up, set your thermostat, and forget about them.
