
Why your bathroom heat lamps keep dying (and how to actually fix it)
Ever notice how bathroom heat lamps always seem to quit right when you need them? It’s usually the same story: steam gets inside the housing, things start to corrode, and eventually, you’ve got a short circuit. It’s a pain. That’s why we’ve started moving toward IP65-rated infrared elements. It sounds technical, but here is what it actually means for you. The “Waterproof” Part An IP65 rating is basically a fancy way of saying the unit is sealed tight. Dust can’t get in, and water jets can’t force their way through. In a steamy bathroom, that’s a lifesaver. We use high-temp gaskets and special potting compounds to lock everything down. The result? The electrical guts stay bone-dry, even when your mirror is completely fogged over. Instant Heat vs. Waiting Around Old-school heat lamps are kind of sluggish. They rely on basic filaments that waste a lot of energy just trying to warm up the air around them. Infrared is different. By using a tungsten filament in a halogen-filled quartz tube, the heat doesn’t mess around with the air—it hits you directly. It’s instant. You flip the switch and you feel it immediately. No waiting. A Few Things to Keep in Mind If you’re swapping these into an old fixture, they usually drop right in. But there is a trade-off. Because these units are airtight to keep the moisture out, they trap more heat inside the housing. They run hot. Really hot. Because of that, you can’t just use any old wiring or cheap plastic covers—those will warp or melt. We stick to die-cast aluminum or reinforced polymers to keep everything stable. Just make sure your switches and wires are up to the task. At the end of the day, it just makes life easier. Fewer blown fuses, no more crusty, corroded sockets, and way fewer trips to the hardware store. It’s just a smarter way to handle a wet room.
