
Why “Explosion-Proof” Quartz Actually Matters in Your Shower
When you’re picking out an infrared heater for a bathroom or an outdoor shower, most people just look at how hot it gets. But here’s the thing: you’re putting high-voltage electricity and extreme heat right next to a bunch of water. That’s a recipe for trouble. If you use a standard quartz tube, it’ll probably crack.
The problem with “Thermal Shock”
Quartz is great because it handles heat and lets the infrared rays through perfectly. But it has a bit of a temper. Imagine a tube glowing at 800°C. Now imagine a single, stray drop of cold shower water hitting it. The glass shrinks instantly in that one spot, the stress builds up, and pop—it shatters. That’s why we use explosion-proof tubes. They aren’t magic; they’re just engineered with a specific wall thickness and internal tension. If the glass does fail, it doesn’t burst like a bomb. It cracks in a controlled way, so you don’t end up with shards of glass flying toward someone taking a shower.
Keeping the water out
Waterproofing isn’t just about a fancy plastic box. The real battle is at the end caps. We use reinforced crimping and high-temp silicone gaskets to seal everything tight. If steam sneaks into the filament housing, you’re looking at a blown fuse or a short circuit. Not a great way to start your morning. The beauty of short-wave radiation is that it doesn’t bother heating up the air first. It goes straight to your skin. So, whether the room is bone-dry or thick with steam, you still feel that deep, immediate warmth.
A few warnings on installation
These things put out a lot of heat. Really intense heat. You can’t just slap one onto any random ceiling and call it a day. Make sure your housing is rated for the wattage, otherwise you might find your plastic fixtures melting. And please, for the love of everything, use a dedicated GFCI circuit. You need a proper ground and leak protection. Without that, the “explosion-proof” glass is only doing half the job. Get the wiring right, or the hardware doesn’t even matter.
